A reasonable starting point for any survey of Hungary is Budapest, where you can see the most complete cross-section of the country's history and culture, from extensive Roman ruins to Art Nouveau buildings. The major sights of Budapest are scattered all over the city's 200 sq. miles, so your clients can't expect to accomplish much on foot.
Budapest is the capital of Hungary with almost two million inhabitants. It is the center of administration, industry, trade, transport and traffic, education, culture, arts and sports. It is situated on both banks of the river Danube: called Buda and Pest. There are eleven bridges over the Danube. Of the capital cities of the world Budapest is the richest in thermal baths. The city is also referred to as the city of museums, and the museum of the cities. |

Should you have only 2 days in Budapest...

Day 1: Half-day tour in Buda. Visit the mid 13th century Matthias church and visit of the Fishermen's Bastion, a great panoramic lookout point. Walk the cobbled stone streets of the area, packed with medieval buildings, outdoor cafes and quaint shops. Visit to Gellert hill, with a stunning view of the whole city. (app. 4 hrs.) Afternoon program: Half day excursion to Szentendre, a charming medieval artists' village with many traditional restaurants, art galleries and museums, only 10 miles from Budapest. Lunch in a local restaurant. (app. 4 hrs.) Evening program: Dinner at the famous Gundel restaurant and/or a spectacular 1 hour river cruise on the Danube with all the illuminated sights of Budapest (an absolute must on day 1 or 2) |

Day 2: Half-day tour in Pest. Visit of Heroes' square, built for the Hungarian millennium, City Park with Vajdahunyad Castle, drive along Andrassy Boulevard, visit of St. Stephen's Basilica and the Parliament House with the 1000-year-old crown jewels. (app. 4 hrs.) Lunch in Budapest Afternoon program: Half day excursion to Gödöllő, 18 miles from Budapest. Visit of Grassalkovich Palace, formerly used as a state royal summer residence, one of the most outstanding examples of rural baroque architecture in Hungary. From Maria Theresa to Queen Elizabeth (the beautiful Sissy) other members of the House of Habsburgs stayed here too. In the park of the palace a Calvary was built in baroque style in 1771. Evening program: Dinner and/or concert or opera

Day 3: Visit the Statue Park, the famous-notorious park of former socialist statues erected in Budapest. These statues were removed with the changes of political leadership taking place in 1989-1990. Another pearl of Budapest is the Central Market Hall, get a taste of real Hungarian architecture, meanwhile munching on an authentic Hungarian apple strudel! With regards to special interests, visit the museums of Budapest, the city offers a huge variety of art and history. A few examples: Fine Arts Museum, National Gallery, House of Terror, etc... In the afternoon, visit to Szentendre (if clients decided to skip it on day 1) Evening program: Concert or opera (optional)
